LinuxMint gehört bei uns zum Standard-Repertoire
Wenn Kunden vor allem im Privatkundenbereich zu uns kommen, heißt es häufig erst mal, ob wir auf dem Rechner ein Windows 10 installieren können. Klar, machen im Normalfall . Wir hatten aber auch schon mal den Fall, dass das dann nicht ging! Oder zumindest nicht mit erheblichen Abstrichen, indem, was, sich der Kunde an sich vorgestellt hatte.
Auf einem Laptop mit Intel Core i3 2.Generation hatten wir ein interessantes Problem.
Bei dem Notebook MEDION Akoya E7222 waren regelmäßige Abstürze des Windows 10 das Problem.
Einiges probiert. Festplatte geprüft mit CrystalDiskInfo. Speicher mit Memtest86+ über 2 Tage lang getestet.
Keine Fehler gefunden. Dann länger im Internet recherchiert.

In der Liste der Unterstützten Prozessoren ist für Windows 10 21H2 offiziell der Intel Core i3-2350M nicht mehr
erwähnt. Es ist möglich dass Windows 10 auf Teile zugreift, die auf dem i3-2350 nicht vorhanden sind, was Abstürze provozieren kann.

Auf dem MEDION Akoya haben wir dann ein aktuelles LinuxMint 20.3 Cinnamon 64bit installiert.
Textverarbeitung für Kunden LibreOffice installiert. Windows Emulation Wine installiert und eingerichtet.
Als e-mail-Programm Thunderbird.
Unter LinuxMint 20.3 lassen sich Webseiten grundsätzlich als WebApp einrichten.
Netzwerkfreigaben waren etwas fummelig bis die für Windows eingerichtet waren.
Fernwartung installierten wir dem Kunden erfolgreich Google Chrome RemoteDesktop. Interessanterweise läuft das im Firefox. Getestet, mit Windows darauf zugreifen. Funktioniert wie unter Windows.
TeamViewer 11 waren weder alle Linux-Versionen noch emuliert über Wine zum Laufen zu bekommen.
Für TeamViewer 14 funktionierte die passende Linux-Variante dann einwandfrei.
dann noch VLC Player und GIMP installiert. Läuft. Auch laut Kunden Feedback.
Bei neueren Laptops macht die Überlegung ein Linux Mint durchaus Sinn, wenn bei Windows 11 einfach automatisch und ungefragt die BitLocker-Verschlüsselung aktiviert und der Schlüssel dann nur im TPM 2.0 Modul abgelegt wird –
besonders problematisch nach Mainboard-Tausch, da der Schlüssel dann nicht mehr vorhanden ist und die Daten nicht mehr wiederherstellbar sind. So z.B. bei einem von einer Bekannten zur Reparatur gebrachter Laptop Lenovo ideapad 3 14itl6 .
Allerdings kann SecureBoot da Probleme machen, da jedes von Microsoft nicht zertifizierte Betriebssystem nicht bei eingeschaltenem SecureBoot hochfährt.
Aktuell hat LinuxMint eine aktuelle Zertifizierung.
Allerdings geht wohl der trend klar dahin, dass nur mehr das ausgelieferte Betriebssystem auf dem neuen Laptop läuft.
Schwächen von Linux und LinuxMint
Linux ist ein definitiv anderes Betriebssystem als Windows.
Von Windows und MS-DOS gekannte Befehle müssen komplett neu gelernt werden.
Für tieferes Arbeiten mit dem Betriebssystem muss man sich dann mit einer Vielzahl von Befehlen rumschlagen.
Die grafische Benutzeroberfläche ist jedoch mittlerweile so ausgereift, dass auch Computer Anfänger damit umgehen können.
Der Quellcode des Systems ist offen verfügbar. Somit könnte es bei steigender Nutzeranzahl gut sein, dass das System für Hacker und Schadsoftwareersteller immer interessanter wird.
Die Header von LinuxMint und Bootmanager Grub crashen leider des Öfteren. Dann ist unserer Erfahrung nach eine Neuinstallation notwendig.
Das Dateisystem, das LinuxMint verwendet, ist ext4 und die Vorgänger ext3, ext2 .
Das macht beim Datensichern das Problem, dass man dafür erst mal entweder ein Linux oder aber einen Treiber dafür braucht.
Will man vom Linux aus Datenträger nutzen, die einen Austausch mit einem parallel installierten Windows 10 / 11 haben, kann man dafür kein NTFS von Windows nutzen. NTFS kann von Linux aus nur gelesen werden. Bleibt nur FAT32 , wobei das ab 30 oder 40 GB Partitionen vom Standard her nicht mehr wirklich sicher definiert ist.
Das Management von NTFS , FAT32 und ext4, ext3, ext2 und Swap-Partitionen ist für Computerlaien eine extreme Herausforderung und schwer zu erklären.
Externe Datenträger müssen für das Schreiben von Linux aus erst umformatiert werden, ext4, quasi nur für Linux, oder FAT32 .
Stärken von Linux und LinuxMint
LinuxMint ist ein offenes Betriebssystem. Das, was zuvor Nachteil war, kann auch ein großer Vorteil sein.
Durch die Vielzahl der beteiligten Entwickler und Firmen werden Monopolstellungen eingeschränkt.
Auch dass das System, ohne dass man gefragt wird, wie unter Windows 11, die Festplatte verschlüsselt, dürfte nicht so weit kommen.
WebApps – Webseiten können als App verwendet werden. Das ist ein Vorteil zum beispiel für Google Chrome RemoteDesktop. Oder die Seite des Computerservices als WebApp einrichten.
Linux Betriebssysteme können zum Teil auch beschädigte NTFS oder FAT32 Dateisysteme lesen und Dateien noch sichern, wo Windows weit vorher aufgegeben hat. Hatten wir schon einige Male beim Datenretten.
LinuxMint ist wesentlich schneller als Windows. Wenn Windows auf einem alten Rechner, Notebook oder Netbook nicht mehr geht und keine Updates für das System mehr verfügbar sind, sollte man es mal mit LinuxMint oder kleineren Linux-Geschwistern versuchen. Man kann das Gerät dann vielleicht doch noch nutzen und reduziert Elektronikmüll.
Wünsche an zukünftige Linux und LinuxMint-Entwicklungen
Es sollte möglich sein, das System auch komplett unter FAT32 oder NTFS zu installieren und die Schreibbarkeit bei NTFS einzuführen.
Windows und Linux auf einer Partition sollten quasi möglich sein.
Verbesserung der Windows Emulation Wine und dass diese nach Systeminstallation sofort verfügbar ist.
Freie Fernwartung für alle ohne Lizenzgebühren. Ins System integriert.
Anpassung der Kommandos an DOS und Windows Befehle ggf. parallel zu den Linux befehlen.

LinuxMint ist mittlerweile auch was für Computer-Anfänger, wenn es um Dokumente erstellen und Standardaufgaben im privaten Umfeld läuft. Windows kann man, wenn wirklich Rechenpower vorhanden ist, über VMWare laufen lassen.
Gerade auf älteren Systemen, die von Windows nicht mehr unterstützt werden, sind Linux und Linux Mint Alternativen!
Wer nicht eine fragwürdigen Umgang mit den eigenen Daten möchte, wie ihn Microsoft mit Spontanverschlüsselung praktiziert, ist bei LinuxMint besser aufgehoben. Vielleicht lässt sich Microsoft das auch noch zukünftig bezahlen, dass man Zugriff auf seine Daten hat im monatlichen Abo für 89 EUR. Und wenn man dann die Pläne und Ideen von Bill Gates und Microsoft doch mal nicht so prickelnd findet , “Oops Daten-Total-Verlust” .
Also sollte man sich Linux Mint auf jeden Fall mal aussehen.
Man kann es sich ja anfangs einfach mal unter VMWare installieren oder nur mal die Setup DVD ansehen.

LinuxMint is part of our standard repertoire
When customers come to us, especially in the private customer sector, the first question is often whether we can install Windows 10 on the computer. Sure, we usually do. But we have also had the case that this did not work! Or at least not with significant reductions, by what, the customer had imagined in itself.
We had an interesting problem on a laptop with Intel Core i3 2nd generation.
Regular Windows 10 crashes were the problem on the MEDION Akoya E7222 notebook.
Tried a few things. Hard disk checked with CrystalDiskInfo. Memory tested with Memtest86+ for over 2 days.
No errors found. Then longer researched on the Internet.
In the list of supported processors for Windows 10 21H2 the Intel Core i3-2350M is officially no longer mentioned.

We then installed a current LinuxMint 20.3 Cinnamon 64bit on the MEDION Akoya.
LibreOffice word processing for customers installed. Windows emulation Wine installed and configured.
As e-mail program Thunderbird.
Under LinuxMint 20.3 websites can be set up as WebApp.
Network shares were a bit fiddly until they were set up for Windows.
For remote maintenance, we successfully installed Google Chrome RemoteDesktop for the customer. Interestingly, this runs in Firefox. Tested, accessing it with Windows. Works the same as Windows.
TeamViewer 11 could not get all Linux versions to work, nor emulated via Wine.
For TeamViewer 14, the appropriate Linux version then worked fine.

For newer laptops the consideration of a Linux Mint makes sense, if Windows 11 simply automatically and unasked activates the BitLocker encryption and the key is then only stored in the TPM 2.0 module –
This is especially problematic after replacing the mainboard, since the key is then no longer available and the data can no longer be restored. This was the case, for example, with a Lenovo ideapad 3 14itl6 laptop brought in for repair by a friend.
However, SecureBoot can cause problems, because any operating system not certified by Microsoft does not boot when SecureBoot is enabled.
Currently LinuxMint has a current certification.
However, the trend is clearly that only the delivered operating system runs on the new laptop.
Weaknesses of Linux and LinuxMint
Linux is a definitely different operating system than Windows.
Commands known from Windows and MS-DOS have to be learned completely new.
For deeper work with the operating system, one must then struggle with a multitude of commands.
However, the graphical user interface is now so sophisticated that even computer beginners can handle it.
The source code of the system is openly available. Thus, with an increasing number of users, it could well be that the system becomes more and more interesting for hackers and malware creators.
Unfortunately, the headers of LinuxMint and the boot manager Grub often crash. In our experience, a reinstallation is then necessary.
The file system that LinuxMint uses is ext4 and its predecessors ext3, ext2 .
The problem with backing up data is that you need either a Linux or a driver for it.
If you want to use data media from Linux that have an exchange with a Windows 10 / 11 installed in parallel, you cannot use NTFS from Windows for this. NTFS can only be read from Linux. Remains only FAT32 , although this is no longer really securely defined from 30 or 40 GB partitions from the standard.
The management of NTFS , FAT32 and ext4, ext3, ext2 and swap partitions is for computer laymen an extreme challenge and difficult to explain.
External disks must first be reformatted for writing from Linux, ext4, quasi only for Linux, or FAT32 .
Strengths of Linux and LinuxMint
LinuxMint is an open operating system. What was previously a disadvantage can also be a great advantage.
The large number of developers and companies involved limits monopoly positions.
The fact that the system encrypts the hard disk without being asked, as in Windows 11, should also not be a problem.
WebApps – Websites can be used as apps. This is an advantage for Google Chrome RemoteDesktop, for example. Or set up the computer service page as a WebApp.
Linux operating systems can also read damaged NTFS or FAT32 file systems and save files, where Windows has given up far before. We’ve had this happen a few times during data recovery.
LinuxMint is much faster than Windows. If Windows doesn’t work anymore on an old computer, notebook or netbook and there are no updates available for the system, you should try LinuxMint or smaller Linux siblings. You might still be able to use the device and reduce electronic waste.
Wishes for future Linux and LinuxMint developments
It should be possible to install the system also completely under FAT32 or NTFS and to introduce the writeability at NTFS.
Windows and Linux on a partition should be quasi possible.
Improvement of the Windows emulation Wine and that this is immediately available after system installation.
Free remote maintenance for all without license fees. Integrated into the system.
Adaptation of the commands to DOS and Windows commands if necessary parallel to the Linux commands.

Especially on older systems, which are no longer supported by Windows, Linux and Linux Mint are alternatives!
If you don’t want a questionable handling of your own data, like Microsoft does with spontaneous encryption, you are better off with LinuxMint. Maybe Microsoft will pay for this in the future, that you have access to your data in a monthly subscription for 89 EUR. And if you then find the plans and ideas of Bill Gates and Microsoft but times not so prickelnd, “Oops data total loss”.
So you should look at Linux Mint in any case.
